Lands of America recently had $386 million in land, homesites and other rural acreage for sale for sale in South Dakota. This represents some 151,539 acres of South Dakota land for sale. The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $56 million, while the median price for land and other rural acreage for sale in South Dakota came in at $970,361. The average price of farms, ranches and other land for sale in South Dakota was $2 million. There was 1,665 acres of sold land in South Dakota recorded in May 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from April 2018. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $6.3 million. Although 80 percent of land in South Dakota is privately owned, there's still room for over five million acres of state-managed land. The state boasts some of the nation's best pheasant hunting and with annual pheasant harvests regularly topping one million birds each year. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in South Dakota. The financial publication Kiplinger rated South Dakota as the country's best state for retirement based on factors including property and income taxes, health care, safety and its cost of living. Of the 66 counties in the state, Lawrence County had the most land and farms for sale. In terms of its size, South Dakota is the country's 17th-largest state, covering an area of 77,121 square miles (49 million acres). Of its total landmass, 75,811 square miles (98 percent) covers land area, while the remaining 1,305 square miles is made up of water.
