Lands of America data shows almost $798 million in land and rural property for sale in the Mount Rushmore State, which constitutes a total of 210,741 acres of land for sale in the state. Of South Dakota's 66 counties, Lawrence County had the most rural property and land for sale. There were 1,920 acres of sold land in South Dakota recorded in February through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a decrease in sales activity over data from the previous month. The most land sales in the state last month were recorded in Custer County. Although 80 percent of land in South Dakota is privately owned, there's still room for over five million acres of state-managed land. The state boasts some of the nation's best pheasant hunting, with annual pheasant harvests regularly topping one million birds each year. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of its size, South Dakota is the country's 17th-largest state, covering an area of 77,121 square miles (49 million acres). Of its total landmass, 75,811 square miles covers land area, while the remaining 1,305 square miles comprises water. Wildlife to be found on land for sale in South Dakota include turkey, whitetail deer, elk, mule deer, grouse, geese, quail, pheasant, and ducks. Fishermen can enjoy casting for trout, walleye, and pike.
