Lands of America recently had more than $771 million in land, homesites and other rural acreage for sale in the Coyote State, which represents over 199,000 acres of South Dakota land for sale. Of South Dakota's 66 counties, Lawrence County had the most rural property and land for sale. There were 4,220 acres of sold land in South Dakota recorded in December through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a change in sales activity over data from the month before. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $4 million. The most land sales in the state last month were recorded in Fall River, Hamlin, Lincoln, Pennington, Perkins, Tripp County. Although 80 percent of land in South Dakota is privately owned, there's still room for over five million acres of state-managed land. The state boasts some of the nation's best pheasant hunting, with annual pheasant harvests regularly topping one million birds each year. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of its size, South Dakota is the country's 17th-largest state, covering an area of 77,121 square miles (49 million acres). Of this area, 75,811 square miles of the state is land, while the remaining 1,305 square miles is made up of water. Game species to be found on land for sale in South Dakota include turkey, elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, quail, grouse, and geese. Anglers have their choice of trout.
