Recent internal data shows more than $749 million in land and rural property for sale in the Coyote State. This covers about 195,000 acres of land for sale in South Dakota. Of the 66 counties in the state, Lawrence County had the most land for sale. There were 5,646 acres of sold land in South Dakota recorded last month through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from the month before. The most land sales in the state last month were located in Butte, Fall River, Hamlin, Lawrence, Lincoln, Miner, Pennington, Perkins, and Tripp County. Although 80 percent of land in South Dakota is privately owned, there's still room for over five million acres of state-managed land. The state boasts some of the nation's best pheasant hunting, with annual pheasant harvests regularly topping one million birds each year. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of size, South Dakota is the country's 17th-largest state, covering an area of 77,121 square miles (49 million acres). In its entirety, 75,811 square miles of the state is land, while the remaining 1,305 square miles is made up of water. Game species to be found on land for sale in South Dakota include turkey, elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, quail, grouse, geese, and pheasant. Fishermen can enjoy casting for trout, pike, and walleye.
